NUS CREATE

Facade, courtyard and bamboo garden lit as one exterior composition, with colour used structurally rather than decoratively.

Light study — 24° beam at 4000K. Project photography pending client release.

CREATE is a research campus, and research campuses are busy at hours when the rest of a university is dark. The exterior scheme had to make the building legible and safe at 2am without lighting up the neighbours or washing out the sky.

The bamboo garden is the piece that gets photographed. Bamboo is nearly all vertical line, so it responds to tight beams placed low and aimed up the culms — grazing rather than flooding. Wide floods would have flattened it into a green wall.

Colour on the facade is held to a narrow range and used to separate one mass from another. It marks the building's structure instead of decorating it, which is the difference between an architectural scheme and a light show.
