One Punggol Community Club
A civic hub running from early morning to late evening, lit as an indoor street rather than a set of rooms.
A community club is not one building type. It is a hall, a classroom, a sports floor and a thoroughfare, used by different people at every hour of the day, and the lighting has to stay legible across all of it without being reset each time.
The internal street carries the scheme. Continuous slots in the ceiling hold the length of the space so it reads as a route rather than a corridor, and the timber-framed walls take enough light to stay warm after dark.
Because the building runs long hours, everything was specified against operating cost and lamp life as hard as against appearance. A civic building that becomes expensive to run is a civic building that gets switched off.
