An airport lounge has one job the rest of the terminal does not: it has to feel unlike an airport. Passengers arrive from a concourse running at high output and cool temperature, and the threshold has to drop them into something warmer and quieter within a few steps.
Nearly all of the work here is glare control. People in a lounge are reclined, working on screens, or asleep, which means the ceiling is in their field of view far more than it is in a corridor. Every fixture is deeply recessed or shielded, and there is very little light on the ceiling plane itself.
Rest zones sit at the warm end of the schedule and are dimmed on a curve rather than in steps, so the room drifts rather than switches — a distinction most people never consciously notice, which is the point.
